Provide Emergency Support to Communities Flooded by Hurricanes in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala

Hurricane Eta brought heavy rains that devastated communities in Cobán, Alta Verapaz. The Guatemalan United World College scholarship recipients make a call to provide emergency support to the communities of Faisan II, Sonte, Chajmacan, and Balbatzul II, which are currently flooded or at high risk of.

Since last Sunday, November 8, 2020, the families of the 'Faisán II Q'eqchi indigenous community were forced to leave their houses due to flooding. This community will be a priority for this fundraiser.

Faisan II cannot be accessed by land, rather it can only be reached by boat, making it difficult for the assistance they need to arrive, and for vulnerable community members to leave.

Although the images appear to be of a beautiful body of water, what you see pictured used to be dry land where people lived and had their farmlands. In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Eta, the Q'eqchi' community members homes and workplaces have turned into a lagoon and there are no signs of the water receding.

Community members are on edge with the second wave of rains from hurricane Iota and they fear landslides and flash floods.

The families of Faisan II have lost everything and food is becoming scarce. Many families are currently in temporary shelters, many of which are not adequate to protect people from the cold or from the spread of COVID-19.

Since the arrival of the hurricane rains on November 18, the communities of Sonte, Balbatzul 2, and Chajmacan in Cobán are the next communities most at risk.

With the funds raised we will directly with community leaders to assess their priority needs. Fredy Oxom, Pearson United World College graduade from Peña Blanca II in Cobán is on the ground and coordinating directly with community leaders in the affected areas.

Among the priorities will be food, protection against the cold, well-being of babies and young children, first aid, and hygiene and protection kits.

With a minimum goal of $5000 we aim to support 150 of the families most affected by the hurricanes in the communities of Faisan II, Sonte, Chajmacan, and Balbatzul 2 with: -    blankets -    coats -    sweaters -    masks -    disinfectants -    hand gel -    soap -    potable water -    medicines -    diapers -    food

We will be sure to keep you updated with the latest changes. Thank you in advance for your support!
